There's a very classic fantasy story here: The prosperous and happy land that then fell under a shadow when the king fell and the cruel regents took over the reigns of power for the infant prince. For so many years, the land only knew occasional gleams of prosperity, like erring beams of sunlight through heavy clouds, and somehow none of those gleams every quite touched the castle itself. Then the wandering minstrels came in their rattling cart, with songs and cunning and cheer and the lovely young bardess destined to help the prince regain his kingdom...

Or it could just be a very fine atmospheric painting. But I think it's more fun as a story.
